But in a meeting of the representative of the two communities, the property owners of Fair Oaks want to maintain their community as a residential area, and in that case they would have to incorporate separately. In September 12, 1923, Fair Oaks was incorporated with the name of Atherton in honour of Faxton Dean Atherton who has been one of the first property owners in the south peninsula.
Now, Atherton is still a plain of oaks. Native live oaks, white oaks, bay trees, redwood trees, cedars, pines and other ornamental trees approximately six square miles of town. The town is bounded by areas of Menlo Park, Redwood City, Woodside and the unincorporated San Mateo County. As of the Census 2000, there were 7,194 people, 2.413 households, and 1,984 families residing in the town.
Presently, there are still no industries and business center within the town limits. The people’s main sources of income are: professional, scientific and technical services; health care and social assistance; real estate rental and leasing; educational services; finance insurance; and accommodation and food services.
